My Lady saw
\nthat open space to the west
\nunder the storm clouds
\nstill hanging over us.<\/p>\n

Come, she said,
\nit\u2019ll be a special sunset.
\nShe drove Martha and me
\ndown to the bay shore
\nto see the grayblack clouds
\nan intense deep red
\ngrowing from within.<\/p>\n

Then
\nas though that magnificence
\nwere somehow insufficient
\na thunderstorm broke loose.
\nBolts of lightning
\nran across the horizon
\nfrom San Bruno Mountain
\nto Mount Tam
\nstriking down to Earth
\nall along that arc
\nof deep textured sunset.<\/p>\n

The awe of the twilight time
\nthat followed
\nthat was nearly forty years ago.
\nThe thunder still sounds in my ears.
\nMy eyes are still amazed
\nby the lightning cutting across
\nthe dark red of the clouds.<\/p>\n
