the simple splendor

\nback three decades to a canyon
\nin the southern Sierras
\nfull with the smell
\nof kit kit dizie
\nincense cedar
\nand the sap of ponderosa pine.<\/p>\n

I believe we dropped acid that day
\nor the textures, the smells
\nthe dynamic currents
\nof the Tule river
\nalone patterned our consciousness.<\/p>\n

I was still learning
\nthe simple splendor
\nof this exact moment
\nin which I live
\nlearning that
\nfrom you, My Dear.<\/p>\n

A river runs through
\nthe limestone rocks
\nthe wet roots of sedge
\nthe muddy banks
\nwith Summer\u2019s last flowers.<\/p>\n

Grace saw this so I could write it
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

A red dragon fly
\nfloats above the pond
\nwater bugs grasp the surface
\nof the flow
\nthe dynamic tension
\naround each foot
\ncasts a bright bubble of light
\non the mud
