The last poem I wrote for Grace before she died.<\/em><\/p>\n

I never managed to find a way
\nfor you and me to live at the ocean
\nthat and a thousand other dreams
\nI never managed to realize.<\/p>\n

So now I drive up Highway One
\nthrough foggy landscapes\u2013
\nyou always loved them the best\u2013
\ngathering the images of lupin in seas of grass
\ncedars and cypresses, sheep and cows,
\nbarns and tacky vacation homes
\nall soft in their gray splendor.<\/p>\n

I stop and walk along the Sonoma shore
\npausing for you at the edge.
\nThe sun breaks through the winter fog
\nshining the waves breaking up around black rocks
\nshimmering the water\u2019s backwash
\ninto flashing electric pulses
\nrushing to me through the milky air.<\/p>\n

I know you\u2019d know that vision
\nlike you seeing your own true self in a mirror
\nlike me looking into your clear bright eyes.<\/p>\n
